SPIRE’s Dual Sport Dynamo—Mykayla Cunningham

04/18/2023

Mykayla Cunningham sacrificed a lot to attend SPIRE, and she couldn’t be happier with her choice.

Before attending, Mykayla was active at her former school, participating in numerous clubs and extracurricular activities. When she first learned about SPIRE, she decided to attend one of the many sports camps that they organize, and she absolutely loved it.

From that moment on, Mykayla knew SPIRE was where she wanted to be. She knew that with the school’s resources, support, and intense training, she had a chance to continue her pursuit of becoming a top athlete in her sport. More importantly, she knew she would have the opportunity to play against the best. Facing such tough competition was important to her because she understood it would make her a better player.

Originally, Mykayla planned to be a single-sport athlete in SPIRE’s basketball program. However, she earned the opportunity to compete as a part of their track and field program, and she seized it. Her first chance was at the Adidas Track Nationals in Virginia, where she achieved amazing results. With only two weeks of training, she earned a spot on the podium, winning third in the Elite High Jump competition. At that moment, she knew she wanted to continue competing in track and field.

Mykayla’s future at SPIRE and beyond is bright. Currently, she’s there as a multi-sport athlete, dedicated to continuing her basketball career while also training in the high jump to prepare for outdoor track and field competitions.

In the fall, Mykayla plans to attend college, playing basketball at the Division 1 level. During that time, she will be studying to become an elementary school teacher. If she has the opportunity, she would love to be able to compete in track and field beyond the Ohio-based sports training school, and her skills prove she has what it takes.

Knowing that she made the right choice, Mykayla now feels that she is a better person and athlete, and is thankful for the opportunities she has.

Mykayla does everything to honor her grandparents. She particularly wants to honor her grandfather, who passed away in 2021 before her attendence began.
