“This was a huge win for our team. We lost to Brophy Prep last year, so beating them this year felt especially good. It’s a great momentum builder going into the end of the season.”
So says Zachary Wright, one of SPIRE Academy’s top lacrosse players. In the April 14 game against Brophy, he had four goals and five assists, doing his part in the 18-14 takedown of the defending Arizona state champions and current number one team in AZ.
Wright, of course, wasn’t the only big-time contributor in this win against a consistent rival. Liam Luzza led the scoring with a total of six goals and one assist. Anthony Bardonille had five goals and two assists. Finally, goalie Timothy Winfelder had 15 saves and one assist.
Again, Wright: “Our offence played really well, putting up 18 goals, which is the most we’ve scored this season. And Timmy, our goalie, made the kind of key saves we’ve come to expect from him, saves that kept us in the game. And the defence made a number of great stops, which we were able to turn into offensive chances. But, truly, everyone contributed to this epic win. I’m looking forward to the next set of upcoming games.””Brophy has a strong program with a great coaching staff, consistently sending athletes to play high-level college lacrosse, and it meant a lot for us to get a win on the road against such a quality opponent,” says James Harkey, Director and Head Coach of SPIRE Lacrosse. “I can’t stress enough how big of a win this is. This game was our most complete game of the season, so far. We played tough for four full quarters. Eight goals in the fourth was our most productive quarter all year. I’m also just generally excited about our chemistry on both sides of the ball headed into the late season and postseason play. On both offense and defense, we’ve done an increasingly good job of making our teammates’ lives easier.”
