For most student-athletes, the day begins at sunrise. For SPIRE Academy wrestler Jason Dube, it starts even earlier, on his family farm in northwestern Pennsylvania, where grit is forged before he ever steps on the mat.
A sophomore and dedicated day student, Jason makes a 45-minute drive to SPIRE Academy every morning. While his classmates are just waking up, Jason is already feeding livestock, stacking hay, and doing the kind of physical labor that builds more than strength, it builds resolve. When practice ends, he returns to the farm for evening chores and time with family.
This demanding lifestyle, balancing elite wrestling training with daily farm duties, has shaped Jason’s mindset, resilience, and relentless work ethic.
“Having to help on the farm, growing up in this environment… it’s definitely a little different, but I really appreciate it,” said Jason.
At SPIRE, Jason’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed, coaches and teammates alike recognize the quiet intensity that sets him apart. His early mornings in the barn and intense afternoon training sessions aren’t just a schedule, they’re a foundation for something bigger. He’s not only becoming a better wrestler, but a leader among his peers.
Off the mat, Jason is just as committed. His family owns and operates a Brazilian jiu-jitsu studio in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he was introduced to the sport at an early age. The mental and physical discipline of jiu-jitsu gave him an edge, not just in technique, but in focus, patience, and the ability to adapt under pressure.
“There’s a lot of hard work behind the scenes that people don’t see,” said Jason’s mom, Maria, reflecting on his impressive fourth-place finish at USA Wrestling Junior Nationals this summer. “He loves to win.”
His father, Chris, added: “It takes a certain personality where you want it more than others, so you’re willing to sacrifice and do the things it takes.”
Now, the SPIRE community, and the wider wrestling world, can get an inside look at what fuels Jason’s success. In the recently released YouTube feature, I Am Jason Dube, viewers follow his full daily routine: from morning chores and strength training at dawn, to the commute to SPIRE, intense mat sessions, schoolwork, family time, and everything in between.
Jason Dube isn’t just preparing for his next tournament. He’s building a legacy, one early morning, one hard-earned victory, one day at a time.
