04/10/2023

Athletes from SPIRE Academy recently competed in The Adidas Nationals Indoor Track & Field Meet in Virginia Beach, VA. The school performed exceptionally well overall with an impressive number of student athletes earning medals in their respective competitions.

The student athletes at SPIRE train consistently, and they train hard. Their dedication to the sport is demonstrated in their exceptional results at this meet, which include:

  • Aiden Anderson—Long jump 4th place:  Season Best, Pentathlon Championship 5th place All-American/Personal Best
  • Jamario Russell—60m: 3rd place, All-American
  • Jenna-Marie Thomas—60mHurdles: 12th place
  • Milena Sciullo—Freshman Long jump 3rd, All-American, 9th in Triple jump Championship (youngest one in the field) High jump 20th
  • Mykayla Cunningham—High jump (Championship) 6th All-American

The Adidas Track Nationals are one of the three high school-level national championship track and field meets that SPIRE’s team competes in. Tim Mack, Track and Field Program Development Director, explained that when the athletes have the opportunity to participate in a big competition, it’s their competitiveness and the way they work through adversity that inspires him. He said looking back that he realizes, “Of course, they achieved what they did because it’s really competitive, but they work hard.”

Mack is glad that at national competitions like the Adidas Track Nationals, high school athletes have the opportunity to experience more than just working towards the win; they also have a chance to interact with their peers from all over the country. They compete, and they’re able to meet other athletes around the same age who share their love and commitment to track & field.

Additionally, Mack expressed how gratifying it is to witness the athletes he’s trained competing and enjoying their achievements. One of his favorite parts of the event stems from the shared comradery among the athletes. To SPIRE’s athletes, it’s a big deal when they all join together after the event to enjoy what they’ve accomplished.
