Recently, SPIRE Academy provided training facilities for the Brown Ballers team and coaches in advance of The Basketball Tournament. Brown Ballers is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting South Asian athletes. Founded in 2022 by Gautam Kapur, a former NBA Strategist and co-founder of the Brown Ballers basketball team (formerly India Rising), and Navin Ramharak, founder of In The Lab, Brown Ballers aims to provide guidance and resources for South Asian athletes – this population makes up 25% of the world population, yet they remain underrepresented in sports.
As part of their preparations for The Basketball Tournament, a high stakes single elimination tournament broadcast on channels like ESPN and Fox, Brown Ballers utilized SPIRE’s state of the art facilities. This enabled the Brown Ballers team to train in a world class environment close to a performance center, basketball courts, athlete cafeteria and housing to ensure they were in peak condition for the tournament.
Kapur emphasized the significant impact of their partnership with SPIRE on the team’s success. “Brown Ballers would not have had a successful training camp if it wasn’t for SPIRE…they really helped our team solve all of the intangibles that come with a successful basketball program. Our training at SPIRE was second to none…and we would honestly recommend this facility for any professional sports team.”
Kapur also highlighted the unique challenges faced by Brown Ballers, which distinguishes them from other teams in the TBT. “Our team’s DNA is different from the rest of the teams in the TBT. Our players are from all over the world. We need a central place where everyone can live, eat, sleep and train that is cost effective and easy to get to. SPIRE met all of those conditions.”
SPIRE provided an ideal environment for the pre-tournament training. “We could prioritize recovery, walk 5 minutes to an NBA court, record practice, access HUDL film for game analysis, a private locker room and then walk 5 minutes to eat healthy food at SPIRE’s cafeteria – it was amazing.’ Kapur went on to comment, “We only had 4 days at SPIRE, we wish we had a week, maybe even longer to really train and make full use of the facility. You don’t find these things very easily anywhere else. It was a privilege to have access to all of it.”
Brown Ballers, driven by the belief that “excellence knows no color”, aims to create opportunities for South Asian athletes worldwide. Kapur’s vision is to spotlight and develop these athletes, emphasizing “we have [South Asian] heroes, we just don’t know they exist.” He expressed optimism that the partnership with SPIRE will help funnel more athletes to the academy, offering them the training and development needed to succeed at a higher level.
Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, Kapur is enthusiastic about the future of the Brown Ballers partnership with SPIRE. “We look forward to returning in 2025 for a longer training camp.” He envisions a long-term relationship with SPIRE, stating “I hope we can continue to come back to SPIRE for years to come and make it our true home and training camp.”
This partnership not only aims to enhance the training and performance of the Brown Ballers team but also aspires to create a model for other teams to follow. With SPIRE facilities and a shared commitment to excellence, the future looks promising for the Brown Ballers and the broader community of athletes they represent.
