Shaping Champions: Coach Mike’s Journey from Michigan to SPIRE

10/29/2025

Wrestling has always been part of Coach Mike Kulczycki’s identity. He first stepped on the mat at six years old, sparking a passion that would shape the next two decades of his life. A two-time State Champion in high school and two-time Cadet World Team member, Coach Mike went on to compete at the University of Michigan, where he earned NCAA Division I All-American honors. After graduation, he joined Michigan’s coaching staff, spending eight years helping lead the Wolverines to a national runner-up finish.

“I’ve always loved the sport, but it was the opportunity to give back that pulled me into coaching,” Coach Mike said.

Now in his third year at SPIRE Academy, he’s shaping young athletes in the same values that guided his own journey: work ethic, discipline, and a growth mindset. “I’m not the kind of coach who yells to get results. I’d rather teach and build people up.”

This year’s roster reflects that mindset. It includes international student-athletes and a strong group of rising talent. “It’s a dedicated group. They show up, listen, and want to get better. That’s all you can ask for,” he said.

Sophomore wrestler Jason Dube agrees: “Coach Mike pushes me every day, not just physically but mentally. He’s helped me become a smarter wrestler and a better person.”

What sets SPIRE apart, Coach Mike believes, is the all-in-one environment. “Most high school wrestlers bounce between school, clubs, and strength coaches. At SPIRE, it’s all integrated: academic support, elite training, recovery, and performance coaching, all on one campus.”

With top-tier resources and a coach who’s been through every level of competition, SPIRE Wrestling isn’t just preparing athletes to win matches. It’s preparing them to win long-term.
