SPIRE Academy Lacrosse Alumni Named College Conference Freshman of the Year

05/01/2025

Garvin Johnson has wasted no time making a name for himself in the world of college lacrosse. The former SPIRE Academy student athlete was just named Freshman of the Year for his college conference. Johnson plays lacrosse for Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina. He spent a post-grad year at SPIRE, and clearly got a lot out of it.

Johnson collected 27 goals and four assists overall for Lees-McRae this season. He recorded 71 ground balls, six caused turnovers, and a 57.3% face-off win percentage. He also recorded a season-high five goals against North Greenville in the season finale.

“I’m really proud of Garvin’s performance in his freshman campaign,” says James Harkey, Head Coach of Lacrosse at SPIRE. “We asked a lot of him here, playing out of position and filling in where the team needed him. It’s clear he’s been able to help Lees-McRae in a similar way, and we’re thrilled to see him get recognized for his efforts. He deserves it.”
