Hard work pays off! Congratulations to SPIRE’s very own 6-7, 230 lb. Philpps Joseph on his commitment to D1 Oakland University! Joseph was SPIRE’s post graduate basketball team’s fourth leading scorer and top three-point shooter last season.

“I’m blessed to be able to make my dreams come true and finally commit! 110% COMMITTED!” said Joseph.

According to the NCAA, only about 7% of all high school athletes will compete at the NCAA level while just over 2.5% of NCAA student athletes are competing at the D1 level. Joseph joins four other SPIRE basketball graduates in 2020 accepted to D1 collegiate basketball programs. The access to dedicated College Planning and Placement at SPIRE as well as incredible resources throughout campus allow SPIRE student athletes to continue achieving elite success.

The Oakland men’s basketball team is seventh in the nation among active streaks of consecutive games with a 3-pointer at 1,003 straight contests. Their streak began during the Reagan administration! “Phil creates match-up problems at the forward spot because he can really shoot,” says Coach Craig, “but he can also take you off the dribble. I’m looking forward to watching his continued development at Oakland.”

Joseph says he loves the competition. His goal is to become an NBA Legend. The coolest place this Brooklyn boy said he traveled to compete was California!

“My favorite part of being a SPIRE student athlete is the training access to getting better and becoming a better person,” said Joseph. “I had the time to devote to my passion.”
