SPIRE Academy’s Sue and Charlie Powell have been selected as recipients of the USA Track & Field President’s Award, one of the organization’s highest honors. The award recognizes individuals whose service and leadership have made a lasting impact on the sport, and the Powells’ careers exemplify that standard.

With decades of experience at the collegiate level, Sue and Charlie have shaped programs, coached standout athletes, and upheld a model of excellence that has influenced track and field across the country. Charlie spent many years leading the University of Pennsylvania’s program, while Sue served as head coach at the University of Delaware, guiding athletes to success in competition, academics and personal growth.

“I’m honored to be recognized by my peers,” Sue Powell said. “It truly came out of nowhere, and knowing this award comes from peer nominations makes it even more meaningful. I feel humbled. I do this work because I love it and I love track and field, and being able to share that journey with Charlie has made it even more special. We’ve spent so many years working side by side, and I appreciate him every step of the way.”

Today, the Powells bring the same level of commitment to SPIRE Academy, where they continue to mentor and develop emerging athletes. Their leadership strengthens SPIRE’s track and field program and reinforces the Academy’s mission to help student-athletes reach their full potential. Their influence extends beyond competitive results, shaping a culture built on integrity, discipline and long-term athlete development.
