Vaulting to New Heights: Matt Ludwig and the Impact of SPIRE’s Elite Athlete Training Program

08/01/2024

Matt Ludwig is a professional pole vaulter whose résumé includes 2017 Outdoor NCAA Champion, 2020 US Indoor Champion and a spot on the 2020 USA Olympic Team. His drive for success combined with his determination to secure a coveted spot on the 2024 USA Olympic Team was fueled by the training he’s been receiving through SPIRE Academy’s Elite Athlete Training Program. That relationship is a testament to the power of the school’s high-level training programs designed to nurture athletes toward podium-level success.

Early Beginnings and Rise to Prominence

Ludwig’s athletic path began in Chardon, OH, where his love of and aptitude for athletics was cultivated; he grew up competing in football, gymnastics and wrestling. His mother first brought track and field to his attention. With his strength and speed, Matt quickly fell in love with the sport. His natural talent and dedication then became further evident during his time at Lake Catholic High School.

First considering becoming a collegiate decathlete, Ludwig’s complete focus shifted to pole vaulting while looking into collegiate sports and being recruited by coaches who saw his potential for rapid success. This decision was pivotal as Ludwig achieved impressive vaulting heights throughout his high school career culminating in his clearing of 16’-9”.

College Career and Transition to SPIRE

Continuing his athletic path at the University of Akron, Ludwig’s progress took off and by his sophomore year, he vaulted an impressive 18’-8”, setting the stage for further achievements. During his senior year, Ludwig reached new milestones, clearing 19’-0” and clinching victory at the US Indoor Nationals in 2020 with a jump of 19’-4”. He went on to become an Assistant Coach at the university in order to maintain his access to their facilities and equipment while he continued participating in meets around the country.

Ludwig decided to follow his then coach and mentor, Dennis Mitchell, to University of Illinois in pursuit of continuing his training for the upcoming Olympics. After some time in his new environment, he realized that the sports medicine resources for recovering and healing were not up to his standard. Concurrently, COVID began to disrupt everyday life and access to quality training environments, so Ludwig reached out to Tim Mack, SPIRE’s Director of Track and Field, Head Jumps and Multi’s Coach, seeking new opportunities. He had already known of Mack’s work and coaching talent from previous volunteering and event work at SPIRE and knew of the potential opportunity right in his hometown’s backyard. There, Coach Mack (an Olympic gold medalist in the Pole Vault event) began training and mentoring him, offering his seasoned advice and unique Olympic mindset. Ludwig’s return and transition to being back at SPIRE marked a crucial turning point in his career, and he found himself immersed in a training environment with world-class facilities designed for elite athletes.

The Role of SPIRE’s Elite Athlete Training Program

At SPIRE Academy, he discovered more than just a training facility; he found a supportive community nurturing athletic goals. The Elite Athlete Training Program gave Ludwig access to the highest quality facilities, world-class coaching and a comprehensive support system that included mental and athletic training staff, “It’s the complete package…the complete opportunity…they have all these different resources for us, so at least once a week, I’m getting over to the ReCharge and Energize Studio to just experiment [with my recovery days]”. This whole body and mind approach not only honed Ludwig’s physical capabilities but also strengthened his overall mental resilience, crucial for tackling the competitive nature of international athletics. The program is open to qualifying athletes of individual sports like Esports, Swimming, Track & Field and Wrestling.

On Coach Mack’s style of coaching, “He instills a spectrum of intensity and focus while also communicating a calm, visualization-based practice of the sport. I work myself hard and push boundaries within my comfort level, but sometimes that next couple of percents is just out there…a little further.” With the guidance of coaches like Tim Mack and alongside fellow elite athletes such as Branson Ellis, Matt Ludwig has thrived at SPIRE. The program’s emphasis on keeping an athlete’s body in check by combining serious training sessions along with adequate recovery periods has shown itself to be extremely valuable in optimizing Ludwig’s performance and preparing him for major competitions, including the Olympic Trials.

Pursuit of Olympic Excellence and Future Aspirations

As he was getting ready for the 2024 Olympic trials, Ludwig recognized the challenges and sacrifices inherent in elite athletics, and he emphasized how important mental strength and physical abilities are. In a recent interview he expressed, “You want to be the best…you got to conquer the mental side because you’re more than physically capable, but you’ve got to conquer the mental side of it.”

In the weeks leading up to the trials, Ludwig had some serious preparing to do. He got back from a competition in Europe, had one final training session, and began mentally preparing for the challenge ahead. He changed his eating habits, shed some weight and readjusted his sleeping schedule so that he arrived in Oregon for the Olympic Trials fresh and ready to do his best. Despite recovering from Achilles pain, his hard work and training at SPIRE really paid off. While he ultimately didn’t qualify for the Olympic team (only the top three athletes from the trials go on), he came in fifth and told us, “I jumped with no misses through the preliminary round and qualified for the final. I set three seasons’ best performances in that single meet. So for me…it was a successful trip.”

SPIRE has a bright vision for its Elite Athlete Training Program. Ludwig’s story and his path show the school’s commitment to giving its athletes the tools and the environment needed so they can achieve their dreams, building a community where athletes regularly train, work and thrive together. The Star Beacon, Geneva’s local paper, recently featured Ludwig’s journey – a testament to the objective potential that he & the Elite Athlete Training Program are providing to the Track & Field community.

Matt Ludwig’s story is one of athletic achievement and also one of growth and the pursuit of excellence. In addition to this year’s Olympic trials, he is already looking forward to the 2028 London games. He told us, “I have my eyes set on the 2028 Trials for the LA Olympics.” He explained that by then, he would be 32 years old and it might be the last Olympics he would be able to physically able to compete at. Ludwig has a busy last half of the outdoor season, 9 competitions in the course of 4 weeks. As he continues working toward achieving greatness, Ludwig’s relationship with SPIRE is a testament to the transformative power of the school’s Elite Athlete Training Program in shaping and developing Olympic level athletes.
