USAW U23 Nationals & U20 World Team Trials: Everything You Need to Know

The 2023 USA Wrestling U23 Nationals and U20 World Team Trials are almost here! The event, taking place June 2 – 4, will be hosted at SPIRE Academy’s campus in partnership with the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission in Geneva, OH.

This championship showcases U23 (ages 18-23) and U20 (Juniors, ages 18-20) wrestlers competing for a chance to represent the United States at the 2023 UWW World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia in September. 

Additionally, the highest 8-place winners in the U20 division, who are age and grade eligible will all qualify to compete at the Junior and 16U National Championships taking place in Fargo, ND this summer.

The schedule of events includes both Greco-Roman and Freestyle events.

U20 Athletes must be Pre-Qualified. Athletes must be US citizens and eligible to obtain a US passport.

Sunday, May 28th

  • 10:00 PM EST – Online registration closes for all divisions

Thursday, June 1st

  • 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM – Practice Times and Credentialing (U23 and U20 Greco-Roman, All Weights)
  • 6:00 PM – Late Registration Deadline U23 and U20 Greco-Roman (Must be processed online)
  • 6:00 PM – Seeding Meeting (U20 GR only)
  • 7:00 PM – Seeding Meeting (U23 GR only)

Friday, June 2nd

  • 6:30 AM – Doors open for warm-up
  • 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM – *Medical Check/Weigh-ins (Scratch Weight) (U23 GR & U20 GR) 
  • 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM – Mat Officials Clinic
  • 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM – Pairing Officials Clinic

*See weigh-in Procedures – Athletes competing in both styles must weigh in for each style, no weight allowance will be given.

Session 1: Greco-Roman

  • 10:00 AM to 2:15 PM – U20 GR World Team Trials Challenge Tournament – Preliminaries, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Challenge Finals & Consolations
  • 10:00 AM to 2:15 PM – U23 GR Preliminaries, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, & Consolations

Session 2: Greco-Roman

  • 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM – U20 GR World Team Trials – All Medal Matches and FINAL WTT Best 2 out of 3 finals
  • 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM – U23 GR – All Medal Matches and Best 2 out of 3 Finals
  • 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM – Practice Times and Credentialing (U23 and U20 Freestyle, All Weights)
  • 6:00 PM – Late Registration Deadline U23 and U20 Freestyle (Must be processed online)
  • 6:00 PM – Seeding Meeting (U20 FS only)
  • 7:00 PM – Seeding Meeting (U23 FS only)

Saturday, June 3rd

  • 6:00 AM – Doors open for warm-up
  • 7:00 AM to 7:30 AM – *Medical Check/Weigh-ins (Scratch Weight) (U23 FS & U20 FS)

  • 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM – U20 FS World Team Trials Challenge Tournament – Preliminaries, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Challenge Finals & Consolations
  • 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM – U23 (Men) FS Preliminaries and Consolations

Session 2: Freestyle

  • 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM – U20 FS World Team Trials FINAL WTT, Best 2 out of 3 finals
  • 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM – U23 (Men) FS Preliminaries and Consolations

Sunday, June 4th

  • 6:30 AM – Doors open for warm-up
  • 7:30 AM to 7:45 AM – *Medical Check/Weigh-ins (Scratch Weight) (U23 Men FS)
  • 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM – College Coaches Meeting

*See weigh-in Procedures – Athletes competing in both styles must weigh in for each style, no weight allowance will be given.

Session 3: Freestyle: U23 (Men) FS

  • 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM – Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Consolations, All Medal Matches, and Best 2 out of 3 Finals

Weigh Ins/Medical

Weights do not carry over – Athletes must weigh-in for each registered division at Scratch Weight.

Weigh-in Procedures: Athletes must bring a physical copy of their USA Wrestling Membership Card in order to record the weight at the scale.

Wrestlers must have a current USA Wrestling card to scan at the scale in order for officials to input the correct weight. Wrestlers must have a competition singlet on when entering the weigh-in area. They must submit to a skin disease screening prior to weigh-in. The chief medical officer has full authority without appeal in determining the eligibility of an athlete to compete. Parents/coaches cannot accompany the wrestlers. They will not be allowed to carry additional clothing with them during weigh-ins.

Medical Check:

Athletes must be present in a competition singlet and must submit to a skin disease screening prior to weigh-in. The chief medical officer has full authority without appeal in determining the eligibility of an athlete to compete.
